Dermal fillers are injectable gels made from hyaluronic acid (HA). HA occurs naturally in our skin and provides moisture, plumpness, firmness and suppleness to the skin. Youthful skin has plenty of naturally occurring hyaluronic acid. As we age, the ability of the body to produce new hyaluronic acid decreases. The reduction of HA contributes to loss of contour and volume in the face, including the lips.

Why Have Lip Filler?

Different clients have different goals when it comes to lip filler.  Some clients want to augment their lips, create more balance to their lips, or improve on an asymmetry in their lips.  Other clients want to restore volume to the lips that has been lost with aging, which is an inevitable phenomenon for all of us! Which Dermal Fillers are Best for Lips?

In general, dermal fillers are classified by the viscosity (thickness) of the product.  Sometimes we want a stiffer filler to provide structure (such as Juvederm Voluma or Restylane Lyft in the cheeks), and sometimes we want a more mobile filler to provide plumping, volume restoration, and hydration while being able to move with the tissues.  A soft, moveable filler is the ideal choice in and around the lips, and gives a natural result.

There is a trend these days to have overfilled lips. At Timeless Youth MD, Dr. Melissa prides herself on making sure your lips look natural and proportionate to your facial structure.

What Types of Lip Filler are Available?

There are several dermal fillers available that are excellent for use in the lips.  Juvederm and Restylane families of fillers each have great choices, as well as Revanesse Versa.  Dr. Melissa will listen carefully to your goals and concerns, as well as examine your lips, and then recommend the dermal filler she believes will be best for you.

How Long does Lip Filler Last?

Depending on the filler chosen, results can last 9-12 months.  Since lip fillers are formulated with hyaluronic acid, the skin will retain moisture and softness, enhancing long-lasting results.  Results are not guaranteed and your results may vary.

What are the Side Effects of Lip Filler?

The most common side effects of lip filler are swelling, bruising, tenderness, redness, pain, and the possibility of discomfort and itching.  These common side effects are temporary responses that can occur at the treatment site.  When you book your appointment at Timeless Youth MD, please feel free to talk to us about how to minimize any bruising or swelling when having your injections.

What is the Recovery from Lip Filler Procedure?

Recovery time is minimal, allowing you to return to your usual activities after the procedure. You may experience mild side effects such as redness, tenderness or swelling right after the procedure, but side effects should subside within a couple weeks. We recommend within the first 24 hours after your treatment, that you not do extreme exercise and limit your sun exposure.  Ice to the area can also be quite helpful.

Do Lip Filler Injections hurt?

Lip filler is formulated with a small amount of lidocaine, a local anesthetic, which reduces pain and maximizes comfort during your procedure.  Dr. Melissa also places topical numbing cream on the lips prior to your procedure to minimize discomfort.  Ice can also be very helpful, during and after the procedure.

Is Lip Filler Safe?

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar molecule found in your body, making dermal filler injections safe for adults age 21 and older.
